Consultations & Co-Management: What’s the Difference?

Consultations

Quite simply, consultations are comprehensive eye exams designed to help us determine if laser eye surgery is right for you.

While many people can have surgery safely, several different conditions can affect your candidacy. These conditions include:

It’s important to note that laser eye surgery doesn’t guarantee 20/20 vision. While many people enjoy perfect vision after laser surgery, others still need glasses or contact lenses for certain situations.

After your surgery, we’ll schedule follow-up visits here at Vista Eyecare to ensure your eyes heal properly. We’ll be in contact with your surgeon during this time to collaboratively manage (or co-manage) any issues that might come up. It’s normal to experience a few mild side effects for the first few weeks or months after your surgery.

Some side effects can include:

These side effects typically resolve as your eyes heal. Please let us know if your symptoms become more severe or if your vision doesn’t improve after your surgery.

Types of Laser Corrective Surgery

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

PRK is the original form of laser vision correction and is still a good choice for people whose corneas are too thin for other procedures. PRK uses an excimer laser to eliminate nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea. This reshaping allows light entering the eye to focus properly on the retina, producing clear vision.

LASIK eye surgery differs from PRK in that a flap of tissue is cut and lifted before corneal reshaping. When this flap of tissue is put back down, it seals overnight, resulting in less discomfort and faster visual recovery than PRK.

IntraLase or “iLASIK” replaces the handheld cutting tool traditionally used in the first step of LASIK eye surgery with a computer-guided femtosecond laser to protect against the possibility of certain complications. Horizon Laser Vision Center was the first laser eye surgery clinic in Saskatchewan to perform iLASIK.

Horizon Laser Vision Center is also the only Saskatchewan laser clinic to offer the newest form of laser vision correction, SMILE surgery.

SMILE uses the femtosecond laser from iLASIK in an innovative way to reshape the cornea without creating a flap (like in LASIK) or removing surface tissue (like in PRK). Its primary advantage is that it is less invasive and less likely to cause dry eyes than the other procedures.
